In as little as 5 minutes…
Life itself is stressful. You and I are both aware of that or we just wouldn’t be here. Entire conversations are held around our triggers and what we are experiencing at work, home, sports, politics, religion, sex… The list is never ending but let’s just look at 1 area.
The JOB. Yeah, that place our kids think we go to have fun and play games each day. According to WebMD, 40% of US workers have “office ” stress. Some of the more common work stressors include:
- Being unhappy in your job
- Having a heavy workload/responsibility
- Poor management
- Dangerous conditions
- Discrimination and/or harassment
The fastest way to solve your work related problems? Leave the job. Problem solved. Now we have eliminated one stressor from your life and my own personal job satisfaction just soared thru the roof. And increased a lot of your other stressors while ensuring job security for me.
“No matter how much pressure you feel at work, if you could find ways to relax for at least five minutes every hour, you’d be more productive.” Dr. Joyce Brothers
That 5 minutes sounds reasonable. Unless you are on a production line or in a situation where it is unsafe to close your eyes and center yourself for a quick break. But the theory is sound. When I was involved in production, I tried to take several moments to just stretch, to change body positions whenever possible. Usually a simple step back to take a deep breath (or two) was all that I needed.
Music can be a great way to take a quick break from stress, if the work environment allows it. While I tend toward a more relaxing meditation music style (no surprise there); for a quick reset I often use The Doobie Brothers “Listen to the Music”.
Nice, light and upbeat music to get the mind refocused on the task at hand. And just under 4 minutes, a great way to relax quickly and move forward with the day.
Another way to relax is to take a mini-vacation. You can use a picture of something that represents what you are working toward. A friend once had a year calendar on the wall next to his work station. He had dates circled that represented things he was looking forward to. During high stress moments, take a quick look and keep the long range goals in sight.
Often our options are limited at work because of the environment, safety concerns, and other workers. Taking an extra few minutes per hour may not always be possible. You can always add in simple ways to relax after work that can help with the transition.
