Alternative Indie Rock Music-Popular and Stronger

The alternative indie rock music scene is online!

Alternative indie rock music came out of the music underground in the 1980s and became popular in the 1990s. The term’s original meaning was broader, referring to the
musical style or simply the independent, do-it-yourself attitude of punk rock. Also used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced. At times, “alternative” has been used as a catch-all description for music from underground or little known artists. All existed and operated outside the Mainstream. Some artists have received mainstream recoginazation (for example, Niverna, U2, and REM) and signed with major music labels.

Some of the more popular online streaming and download sites are: YouTube, Sound Cloud, Sound Click, and Audiomack. The free streaming sites also provide an unheard of opportunity for unknown artists to reach out and build a fan base. All they need is to be heard. Classic, rock, pop, blues, jazz, rap, hip hop, R&B, soul, Ambient, soundtracks, folk, dance, EDM, disco, new age are some of the genres that are currently being written and produced.

Relaxation is a way to rest and enjoy yourself; something that you do to stop feeling nervous, worried, etc. Generally for a release of tension, a return to equilibrium. It occurs naturally when we do something familiar, comforting, or self-satisfying. Music can and does enhance the mood we are in. If you are sad, listening to sad music can make us even more sad. Angry music can feed into our anger. Up-beat happy music can lift our spirit and help to decrease anxiety and worry.

Nicolai Heidlas

I wish I could say that I “discovered” Nicolai after sifting thru hours and hours of listening to different music and artists. Just to make it seem as if I had to really dig deep, but the truth is, I did a simple search on YouTube and saw the song Take the Chance and said “Why not?” It clicked, not only with the mood I was in but with a nice pace for a walk I had been planning on for later in the day. After downloading several songs, I bookmarked the page and had a great play-list for a walk and more.

Nicolai Heidlas is 23 years old and from Wetzlar, Germany. He is a self-taught musician, songwriter and music producer who started making music in 2011 with a guitar he got for Christmas. Nicolai is a creator of free background music on YouTube and Sound Cloud. His music can be used on all kinds of projects – and the best thing is: It’s completely free! Nicolai has done a few collaborations with friends but the majority of songs were composed and recorded by himself. He plays acoustic and electric guitar, bass, ukulele, banjo, accordion and keyboard.

Following the ages long tradition, Nicolai started out with learning a few chords on the guitar. Then doing a lot of song covers to get used to making music. And then eventually he created his first song; which, of course, still exists on his hard drive. Making music and producing my tracks is his main passion. Currently employed as a medical-technical assistant, and just beginning to make a little of income with music.

Wrapping it Up

Alternative indie rock music is a broad term, covering many types of music. My focus is on instrumentals that can be used for relaxation and for recreation. Songs that can help with anxiety and depression; songs that can enhance a good feeling and lift it even higher.

Nicolai’s music, like so many of the other independent artists, covers a wide range of different types of music. This provides us as listeners with options never enjoyed before. Picking and choosing music for our own personal play-list, to suit what we need at any point now is simple, thanks to technology and to the next generation of artist. The tough part is trying to decide who makes it on your play-list.

Have you joined in the new age of music? Do you look for songs on the ‘Net? How about searching for new artists, being the “first” to listen or to watch?

I would like to hear your thoughts on using alternative indie rock music as a way to relax. If you have any questions or suggestions on new artists, like Nicolai, please do not hesitate to leave me a comment below. I will reply as soon as I can!

Now I’m open to all kinds of new music who would you recommend from your genre of music ?

    • Hi Otaku, A wide range of musical taste! Great. I too, am into a lot of different styles and artists. One of my favorite styles of all time has to be Native American Flute music. I can recommend just about anything by John Two-Hawks. For the alternative music, not only Nicolai but David Hyde has some great music. You can find a small selection in the Music Tab. Enjoy.

Music has always had a profound effect on the moods of individuals and groups alike. I like chillout and ambient personally for relaxing.

I would recommend giving some of her songs a listen! If you find she sounds familiar, that’s probably because she made the Juno soundtrack lol

    • Hi Rain,
Thanks for sharing Kimya with me. I have not really listened to much Folk but, she is a very interesting musician. On Sound Cloud, my search brought up short jingles and I was like “What?” But, You Tube gave me some great selections, listening to the Simple Folk Radio Session and will listen more this evening. Thanks for sharing Kimya Dawson with me!
